Very often studies like the U.S. News and World Report Surveys are conducted in United States to assess the respective reputation of the educational institutions working in the country. However, there has been a growing resentment against such ranking where reputation played a major part. The furor reached its zenith in the year 2007 when nearly 80% of the institutions refused to participate in the ranking not only during that year but also for any time to come.

However that is only one part of the survey conducted and there are multiple other parts that comprise nearly 75% of the survey conducted. Participation in such surveys was left to the individual institutions. Many universities, colleges, and schools agreed to participate in an alternative format where detailed information about the institution is disseminated for benefit of all concerned making it easier for the families and students to search the colleges and schools of their convenience.

Using information technology in its very refined form in conjunction with the organizations imparting higher education, they intended to create a universal database. Important organizations like the National Association of the Independent Colleges and Universities as well as the Council of Independent Colleges joined the movement.

Such decisions taken by the group of universities and colleges in United States was resented by the media as they considered the measurement of intangibles of the college vital and also pointed out those characteristics cannot be assessed using statistical data. At the same time the reputation of the school can be a great catalyst in getting fast employmen.

Moreover, though the survey was subjective in nature, it is an accepted methodology in the industrial circles where one takes to such method to find out the utility and usefulness of rival industries. US News has been providing the exact information for multiple years by now and any other agency is likely to make mistakes in assessment.

Like the entire educational system, types of universities, colleges, and schools; the process of administration in educational institutions in United States is also unique. For instance; students have the facilities of making common application to a group of colleges. At the same time there is no limit on the number of institutions to which a student can apply for admission. Only requirement is that an application has to be submitted in respect of each institution separately.

Another very peculiar feature of the admission process in US educational systems is that a student is either accepted or rejected on a holistic basis. That means the student will not be accepted or rejected for a particular subject but they will be accepted or rejected for the entire college or university. In terms of method it is in sharp contrast to the methods adopted in European and many Asian countries where the students are admitted or rejected subject wise.

Some of the students prefer to be enlisted in the waiting list instead of being rejected altogether. Benefits of such listing is that many students in USA apply to numerous schools and colleges and it is most likely that they will prefer one college to another basing on convenience, transportation, fee structure, and financial aids available etc. In such cases other colleges where they applied and were selected will have vacancies to be filled up. That is where the waiting list students may step in to fill out the slots.

A uniform pattern is followed in respect of admission process in United States. Five major parts that constitute the entire admission process are as follows : -

1. ACT/SAT scores registered by the student concerned
2. GPA
3. College Application
4. Essay and
5. Letters of Recommendation.

While all colleges may not require the recommendations, they certainly enhance the chances of admission.

In United States one will find full-fledged universities having a number of colleges in different streams within its campus or periphery and also such colleges and universities that are stand alone. In fact these stand alone universities are made of only one college and may be a few schools.

Purdue University is one that has multiple colleges with divergent streams under its jurisdiction. It is the example of multiple college university. On the other hand there are single college university like the Brown University where there is only one college for the undergraduates and two schools. Among these two one is the Graduate School meant for students that wants to pursue post graduation, and the Medical School, preparing students to become doctors in future.

Another stand alone institution is the Dartmouth College that is also organized in the pattern following that of the Brown University. Undergraduates are enrolled in Dartmouth College directly and post graduate students enroll in the three schools under the college. These schools are the Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth Medical School and the Thayer School of Engineering.

On the other extreme are colleges such as the Carleton College that is an entirely undergraduate college for the liberal arts. The institute comprises of only one college imparting education in arts, natural science, physical science, and languages. While in truth it is an university, it is one of “colleges” as it is understood in the United States.

Difference of Carleton College from others is that it does not confer any graduation degrees and has no schools that would focus on non-liberal-arts. It however has an academic sector that is composed of related departments sharing common philosophy of liberal arts and education. Students from the college only earn the undergraduate degrees.

Education is should be compulsory and priority for every individual. Education is important because without it, you can’t even differentiate between right and wrong. Research, is basically derived from the Greek word “recherché” which means to search for the truth. So, educational research is the research carried out in the field of education and is based on truth and facts and figures.

Educational research is very important to bring sufficient changes in other fields on the basis of its results. Research is also important, because it helps in finding new concepts, which were neglected earlier or were not considered important.

Educational research is also helpful in solution of many educational problems. While conducting research, the common educational problems faced by students and teachers can be brought in to front and the root causes for these problems can be highlighted and then solutions can be suggested accordingly. It is a time that calls for advancement to be made in each and every field of our lives. One can have certain innovative ideas to progress and excel but there is one way that just opens out new ways for advancement in any particular area. It is educational research we are talking about.

It has its implications and benefits not only for the students conducting it but also for the society and in general our global world. For students, at post-graduate level, it is compulsory part of their study program. One can always conduct a previously done research and can see the results within the present parameters while can go for researching that particular aspect which would not only fulfill his/her educational requirement but would give a great new horizon to the global world.
